Due to normal agricultural practices to obtain optimal crop yields, in many cases the soil was treated only as a growth medium. The efficiency of inputs decreased and the normal reaction was to do more and more chemical inputs. Gypsum and lime applications no longer have the desired effect on the chemical analysis of the soils. The infiltration rate of soils decreases, the aeration decreases and sodium levels continue to rise. The net effect is that the biological component of soil systematically dies out and more and more inputs are needed to obtain optimal yields.
We at MOS group (Microbial Organic Solutions) have been conducting research in South Africa regarding soil biology since 1997. With initial research solely organic acids were applied, but results were not consistent due to little biological activity.
Since 2002, we have started using the commercial combinations of microbes and organic acids as soil treatments. Improvement in crop yields and quality is the net effect, with reduction in chemical inputs.
